Aishwarya, Swordly Yours

July 26th, 2007

Right, Mrs Bachchan Junior as a warrior…in a quest to vanquish her foes (not including Salman Khan). At least, that’s what she does in the new film The Last Legion. This film promises to be such a blockbuster that it had its worldwide release in Russia as Последний легион. Aishwarya doesn’t get to do the wet sari routine in this film but she just get to take a dip:

The film stars Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley.
In other Rai news, she’s getting another wax statue at Madama Tussaud’s, this time in New York’s Times Square. So, time already for the wax statue-Asihwarya Rai acting jokes….yawn.

Rail Life/Reel Life

July 26th, 2007

Wes Anderson is a funny director…funny in that he makes funnyish films that few people watch - like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Now, he’s made another film that tries to be funny, about three brothers on a spiritual quest. That’s Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody. Their journey is on a train - The Darjeeling Limited, as the film is called. Of course, anyone who has ever travelled by the Indian Railways will scarcely find that experience funny, especially after a three hour (if you’re lucky; three days if not) delay at a happening town such as Patna. What’s funny is how Irrfan Khan keeps popping up in all these Hollywood Easterns, following up from The Namesake and A Mighty Heart. If you watch the trailer carefully, you may catch a glimpse of the guy:

This film’s due out in September.

Fevicol is one Indian company that consistently comes up with smart, funny commercials. This one featuring Katrina Kaif is just a recent example:

Green Zone Grabs Green

June 19th, 2007

His name is Rajiv Chandrasekaran. He’s the Assistant Managing Editor of the Washington Post, based in (duh!) Washington. He’s also the author of Imperial Life In The Emerald City, a bpok about the Green Zone the Americans set up in Baghdad. And that book has just won the Samuel Johnson Prize. That Prize is considered the richest for non-fiction in the world. Which is where the other part of green comes in. Here’s a video from an interview on The Daily Show after the book came out. Nice to watch even if it just to hear how Jon Stewart mangles the pronunciation of Rajiv’s surname:

Legal Alien

June 15th, 2007

America has recently been obsessing over the matter of legalising illegal immigrants. For instance, all those who spell legalising with an S instead of a Z (which is pronounced ZEE not ZED). Asif Mandvi, a regular on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is doing his bit for spread the word about how brown can be better if its the correct shade of brown. Here’s a clip:

IndJew Bowl

June 7th, 2007

They play this strange game in America that they like to call Football. Except they play it mostly with their hands, without their brains. Each side is represented by overgrown gorillas. Only in America!
However, two groups not really known for their athletic skills or their physiques, Indians and Jews, have taken to having an annual Indo-Jew Bowl in some place called Skokie. Check it out:

.
It’s all fun, baba, all fun.

Brett Lee’s Bouncer

May 8th, 2007

This video has been around forever but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve more exposure, simply because it’s so godwaful. We wonder why Asha Bhonsle got involved in this project. The lyrics are pathetic, the singing pedestrian and the music paltry. Thankfully, Lee has another career to fall back on.

Indian Idol Sucks Too

May 8th, 2007

We already know that it sucks big time…but to keep it sucking the makers of Indian Idol try and wickedly exploit the poorest performances, like this one:

Sanjaya Superstar

April 25th, 2007

As we all know, Sanjaya Malakar was booted from American Idol last week. Of course, the remaining contestants have all the charisma of a retarded jellyfish. And there’s talk on blogs that Sanjaya didn’t actually have the least number of votes but Fox wanted him gone anyway. But this was Sanjaya’s Season. After his exit, the show goes back to sucking. But Sanjaya may be headed toward crossmedia celebrity. He’s been featured in Newsweek, People, everywhere else and has appeared on talk shows including the Late Show with David Letterman. He’s shown he can make fun of himself as with the Top Ten List on Letterman: Ten Top Things I Learned From American Idol. You can go here for the video.

In Fourth Gere: Smooch Smooch Hota Hai

April 24th, 2007

You’ve heard all about the kissathon that Dalai Lamawala Richard Gere indulged in with Shilpa Shetty and the furore after.
While knickers may be in a twist over the episode, remember Gere is a Buddhist so give him a pass for his passion.
Here’s the icky video:
