I) Govt Employees Refrain From Strike: The largest national union of Government employees has decided not to go on an indefinite strike. In a statement, its president said, "We decided not to inconvenience the public. We could always say that we were going on strike for the ultimate welfare of the public, but that is hypocrisy. Anyway, since our workers hardly do anything, most of our demands are unjustified."
2) Paswan Stands Firm: Union Communication Minister Ram Vilas Paswan refused to concede the demands of the striking Post and Telegraph department employees forcing them into withdrawing their agitation. A spokesman for the Ministry said that the minister refused to give in to blackmail tactics as resorting to populism.
3) Delhi Govt, Jagmohan Work in Tandem: The concerted, efficient efforts of the Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and Union Urban Development Minister Jagmohan has resulted in the closure of polluting units in the capital. With timely planning and a long-term strategy not will be the city's air be cleaner but the livelihood of the workers in the affected units has also been safeguarded.
4) Mamata Banerjee Refuses To Resign: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has denied that she threatened to resign from the Union Cabinet in an effort to armtwist the Prime Minster into conceding her demands. A close associate of the Minister said that Ms Banerjee did not believe in such dramatic tactics for cheap publicity.
5) BCCI Dissolved: Owning moral responsibility for the disrepute brought upon Indian cricket via the match fixing controversy, the entire Board of Control for Cricket in India has stepped down. A new Board committed to transparent tactics and upliftment of the quality of the game in the country will succeed it. However, Jaywant Lele will remain as the new Board's astrologer-in-chief.
6) Veerappan Nabbed: A crack commando force of the Tamil Nadu police has arrested dreaded bandit Veerappan. In a reaction to this success, State Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said that the State Government had risen above parochial, political interests for the greater good of the country.
7) Manoj Prabhakar Videotapes Self: Former Test cricketer Manoj Prabhakar has sent to the CBI a 4-hour-long videotape of himself with startling revelations about match-fixing in cricket and his own involvement in the process.
8) IT Raids on Politicians' Homes: The Income Tax department raided the residences of several top politicians and unearthed crores worth of unaccounted wealth and benami property.
9) Banks Force Defaulters To Pay Up: Indian banks have recovered thousands of crores of bad debts from major industrial houses along with outstanding interest on loans. The recovery follows seizure and auctioning of the assets of the defaulters.
